Does Kanye West have a place at the table with the rest of us? And, five things to pray on behalf of Kanye West.

With the state of the world today, I am no longer shocked by anything, but I do have to wonder why that is even a question? It isn’t for us to decide if Kanye has earned his right to call himself saved by the grace of God, for starters, but since it is such a current debate, I had to weigh in.

Kanye West, an American rapper and husband to Kim Kardashian, has outed himself as a born again believer in Jesus Christ recently; And, everyone is losing themselves over it, in the aftermath.

Due to the fact that Kanye West is famous for running towards controversy and he is a consummate showman, his new conversion isn’t being taken seriously by his fans or Christians alike.

Headlines from a simple ‘Kanye West, Christian’ web search pulls up headlines such as: ‘Kanye West’s Christian conversion is less about Jesus than it is about Kanye’ (NBC News), ‘How Kanye West’s Controversial ‘Jesus is King’ is dividing the Christian Community’ (Time Magazine).

On Facebook, a Pastor friend of mine posted “A couple thoughts on Kanye West: 1.Jesus can save anyone 2. I’ve never prayed for Kanye and probably won’t start now 3. I’ve never liked his music and probably won’t start now 4. Jesus can save anyone”.

This is what has struck me to my core about the Christian community; this straddling of: ‘Jesus can do it, but I ain’t believing it if he does’ and the ‘Pray for Hollywood. Pray for our nation’; but when the rubber meets the road, that was all a sham. And, we should be praying for Kanye West when he is a non-Christian, let alone praying for him now that he is claiming that he is a Christian! It is a sad day when a Pastor cannot see the importance in praying for another soul—no matter who that is.

Now, as far as mental health, Kanye West is very open about that fact that he has Bipolar Disorder. In the spring of 2019, Kanye West discussed his mental health with David Letterman on his show “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction”. I was married to a man with bipolar disorder. And, that is the only area that I, personally, have the most concern. It is reported that 15-22% of persons with Bipolar Disorder, also present with religious delusions (Verywell Mind, Keonig, September 19, 2019). Many people report, during manic episodes, that they hear directly from God.

But, even with that being a concern of my own, it should not take away from the fact that you—nor I—have the right to cast him aside and cast rejection upon him. By doing so, we are throwing him back to the world!

In addition—even with his mental health as a factor—if you are a Christian, you cannot overlook the strong and Biblical stand that he is taking on major issues in our culture and society and give the man some kudos for it! West is taking a stand against pornography, secular music that exploits women, lust, promiscuity, abortion and taking a stand for Christ, the family and worship.

For the sake of argument, let us say that it is all a hoax. Let’s say that this is a result of mental health issues, even. Kanye West has the same power of the spoken word that you and I have, and he is sowing into the lives of his children. He is home with them and their mother. He is speaking blessings over them. He is teaching them about Jesus, the King. He is teaching them to worship the Lord. He is effecting hundreds and thousands of other souls—those close to him and those who are fans. No matter where his heart is, genuinely, those are seeds that are sown despite and will bear their fruit in time.

For that I am holding out Hope and expectation!

  • 1. That he continue to mature in his walk with the Lord and that men of great faith come up along side of him to help him walk that out with integrity and selflessness.
  • 2. To continue to give him the boldness to come against the spiritually corrupt practices in our nation.
  • 3. That his wife, Kim Kardashian, support him in his new life as a christian and that his children be positively spiritually changed for life.
  • 4. That those who may choose to accept Jesus as Christ as a result of Kanye West’s salvation, spiritually know and discern to keep their eyes on Jesus and not on West.
  • 5. For the strength to run the race in the face of ridicule from The World and The Church, both.

Hold onto Grace, y’all and remember that we are supposed to love like Jesus did.

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; And with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?”

Jesus, Matthew 7:1-3
