Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Quality Time, Physical Touch, and Receiving Gifts: These are the five love languages as described and theorized by pastor Gary Chapman. The love language theory has been a relationship staple for nearly thirty years. It’s popularity is in part because of it’s simple and very relatable approach to each persons unique longing (or needs) in relationships. Valentine’s Day gifts based on love languages is a must save post!

Choosing a gift based on your partner’s love language makes it more meaningful right from the outset. Taking the time to understand your partner and tailor their gift to who they are is an expression of love, itself.

Understanding your partner or loved ones love language is so important. Responding to them in the way that they receive love is such a selfless act. I had a situation that could have been avoided if the person cared to understand me and love me how I received love. I am not a cut flower person. It is not that I don’t find them beautiful or fragrant. I do, occasionally, buy flowers for the dinner table. But, I do not want someone to buy me flowers as a gift. Watching them die and fade away seems like such wasted money, to me. And, I have been very expressive about this fact.

My ex-husband was a very apathetic person. He didn’t put effort into much of anything. And, he did not put any effort into holidays, especially. He came home one day with one singular cut rose and was kind of like, “here…here ya go…” I will admit, I was angry about it, and I did not respond or react well. I had experienced years of this and our marriage wasn’t doing so well at the time…so, I got very mad. The flower was not really for me; it was for him.

What did I mean by the flower being for him?

He chose to buy me the easiest, most cliche, most effortless gift choice that he could. AND, cut flowers was a gift that I had voiced many, many times that I would not want to receive. So, he was just grabbing something to check off a box. No thought or effort or consideration.

If he needed something cheap and easy and effortless, but done with love and consideration, he could have done that.
